FOHL May 2025 Newsletter
Published on May 01, 2025
May is the fifth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, coming between April and June. It has 31 days. The month of May might have been named for the Roman goddess Maia, or more likely the Roman goddess of fertility Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May.
May never begins or ends on the same day of the week as any other month.
May's flower is the Lily of the Valley. Its birthstone is the emerald. The meaning of the emerald is success in love. Or from the dictionary: may (v) : might, can, could, possibly will …..
Morning Tea
After listening to our wonderful April speaker, Jo Campbell (Yarn Therapy Ltd), one was ‘fit to be dyed’ as who knew the amount of work and creativity that went in to not only dyeing yarn, but deciding on the colours (some of Jo’s are actually based on The Muppets) and selecting the yarn for a variety of purposes.
Something different for the month of May when our guest speaker will be Mayor Bernie Wanden. Do come along on: Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 10.30am and hear what he has to share with us.
Tea and Tales
Come and join Tea and Tales – in Levin it will be on Thursday, 1 May In Foxton it will be on Tuesday, 27 May. Both meetings are from 10.30am to 11.30am. Those attending are welcome to bring a tale to share or just to come and listen. We reiterate, if you are able to join us there will be tea/coffee and biscuits, as well as great company and stories.
Shelf Tidying Working Bees
14 May 2025 (the second Wednesday of the month) will be the next shelf tidying - 8.30 am at the Bath Street, Levin, entrance. Thankfully the shelving at Levin is not quite as high as shown here and it is possible to sit down to put the books on the lower shelves in order (if they need it, of course). It would be appreciated if you could spare an hour or so to assist.
Mother’s Day
Another ‘M’ day is Mothers’ Day which this year is on Sunday, 11 May. A great opportunity to express our appreciation for our mothers.
Read for Trees
For those who supported this wonderful initiative (from 1 December 2024 to 1 March 2025) a special community tree planting event (including a free barbeque) was held at Kowhai Park, Levin, on Saturday 26 April at 2.00 pm.
Thank you to all participants for enabling this to be so successful (with over 42 trees to be planted). We reiterate, hopefully this is something we will be able to support again.
